What is MTHFR and Methylation?

MTHFR is a gene variant that can hinder methylation and detox. Many of those fighting chronic health issues also have an MTHFR variant. When someone does not take an active role in managing their health they will feel absolutely awful. To overcome this issue means you should live like no one else. This will be new to you but necessary to impact quality of life.

We could test if you have MTHFR but it is not necessary in our opinion. Save your money and start living healthier. It is usually not one toxic issue that causes problems but rather the accumulation of many toxins that overwhelm the body.

Benefits of making these diet and lifestyle changes:

  • Healthier cell function
  • Protection against disease
  • Healthy aging
  • Improved mental well-being and cognitive function
  • Enhanced detox of environmental toxins, heavy metals and excess hormones
  • Cardiovascular support
  • Fertility
  • Tissue repair
  • Energy production
  • Weight loss

Below are things we did to get Methylation going.

MTHFR Tips and Hacks - Step 1

Starting with the things you can do for free:

  • No smoking, vaping, etc.
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages, especially wine.
  • Drink reverse osmosis filtered water.
  • Eat whole foods such as meats, veggies, fruit and some whole grains. (hint: these foods do not have an ingredient list).
  • No wheat products bought from stores and restaurants. Yes, this means going gluten free. Processed wheat and added folic acid will bring you down.
    • Avoid folic acid which is synthetic. Those with MTHFR have trouble with it. Read the food ingredients! A red flag is anything labeled enriched or fortified.
    • Although we don't do it, one could consider supplements with folinic acid.
    • We will be testing freshly milled, unprocessed, non-enriched wheat in November 2025 and will post results soon after.
  • Avoid the following:
    • Antacids
    • Processed foods that are laced with chemicals. (hint: these foods come in a box or package and have an ingredient list.
    • Using the fireplace.
    • Swimming pools and hot tubs that are full of chlorine or bromine.
  • Limit the following:
    • Sugar, dairy, corn
    • Citric acid (found in many food and drinks)
    • Artificial colors and preservatives
    • Dried fruits with chemicals
    • Peanuts and peanut butter
  • Even though many have problems with pasteurized dairy, we have seen many (including ourselves), tolerate raw A2/A2 cow's milk direct from a farm.
  • Mold-free coffee can be okay in moderation. Purchase mold free coffee here.
  • Turn on the exhaust fan every time you cook.
  • Remove toxic air fresheners from your car and home.
  • When possible, make it a priority to spend time outdoors.
  • Folic acid blocking drugs such as birth control and Methotrexate can be a problem. Check with your doctor. Nitrous oxide (used by some dentists) can also be a problem.
  • It's also very important to fix the gut, get high quality sleep, work up a sweat (1-3 times a week if tolerated) and reduce stressors.

MTHFR Tips and Hacks - Step 2

Here are things that require some investment:

MTHFR Tips and Hacks - Step 3

Here are things that require a bigger time and money investment:

  • Change mattresses and bedding to healthier options.
  • When replacing furniture or applying paint, look for low VOC options.
  • Eliminate carpets in the home and install tile flooring or low VOC wood.
  • Replace a gas range with electric. The burning of natural gas pollutes indoor air.

Yes, it is quite a long list. These are the things we have done that made a difference. Check with your doctor before making any health changes.

In summary it is not one toxic thing that brings you down but rather the accumulation of all the toxic things that is an issue. So we must do our best to remove exposure to toxicity.

To avoid overwhelm try making one change a week, then evaluate how much better you feel. Some changes will give you a bigger boost.

Remember it is also very important to fix the gut, get high quality sleep, work up a sweat (1-3 times a week if tolerated) and reduce stressors (many of which are hidden that can be found with lab tests).

Take the Next Step to Wellness

Our goal is to be the last practitioner you meet with regarding your main health complaint.

We love doctors and believe their services provide great value. However allopathic methods of medication and surgery are expensive and in our experience, can have limitations when it comes to chronic health issues.

In addition, low health insurance reimbursements don't allow doctors to invest the time we do to listen and coach you along the way.
