What exactly is "Fixing the Gut"?
For years we heard many say that the key to getting our health back was to fix the gut. However, no one knew exactly what that meant. As a result, we continued to suffer.
The good news is that we finally figured it out!
- It's more than eating veggies.
- It's more than eating whole foods.
- It's more than eliminating food intolerances.
- It's more than fasting.
- It's more than taking supplements.
Healing the gut requires a multi-faceted approach that should be the top of everyone's list to do.
Fixing the Gut Hacks:
The steps to take will depend on current status, health history and genetics. Everyone is different. There is no one-size-fits-all option.
Best practice is to make one or two changes a week.
This is what we did to start fixing the gut:- First is to cut sugar and high fructose corn syrup out of the diet.
- Adults cut alcohol drinks.
- Sodas and fruit juices such as orange, apple, grape are out too.
- Raw honey, liquid stevia, maple syrup and dates can be consumed as a sweetener.
- Fix constipation!!!
- This is a must and priority because poop is one of the main ways the body removes bad stuff.
- Eliminate wheat and flour based gooey foods purchased at the store such as breads, pastries and tortillas. Bread made from freshly milled grains einkorn, Spelt and emmer can be a benefit to gut health.
- Supplements can be a huge help. Seek guidance for what is best for your situation.
- This may sound cheesy but it works to get you into a parasympathetic response which is optimum for digestion.
- Before each meal give thanks for the food. Then take a moment to enjoy the smells of your meal.
- With the first bite hold the food in your mouth a few seconds before chewing to savor the taste. No need to savor the following bites, just make sure to chew your food. Shoveling food down your throat with minimal chewing can cause problems.Take your time. It's not a race.
- Eatiing while driving is not recommended.
- Bonus if you can rest 10-15 minutes after each meal.
- After two weeks we removed corn and dairy from our diet. Both can cause big time inflammation.
- Store bought dairy can cause big flare-ups. And yes, we mean ALL dairy: milk, cheese, butter, ice cream, yogurt etc.
- These changes mean that restaurants are out too.
- It is difficult to find something on the menu that is wheat free, corn free, dairy free. The only acceptable treat to have once in a while is a hamburger no bun at In-N-Out. No fries.
- If this seems unbearable, it's time to make an appointment.
- Other foods to consider limiting or eliminating that could be a problem:
- Soy, egg, peanuts, yeast, nightshades and lectins. Soy can cause behavioral issues, nightshades many symptoms including reflux.
- Also foods vulnerable to mold such as oats, grains and coffee.
- Make sure to work on oral health. Regularly brush and floss. Fix issues with gum bleeding.
- Check with your doctor before making health changes.
- This is as far as one can go on their own in our opinion. If issues continue, there is something deeper happening. Next would be lab tests to identify issues such as dysbiosis, mold, parasites, candida, leaky gut, food intolerances and more with a protocol to support the body on a path to feeling better.
Without guidance, DIY can be frustrating. Knowing what to prioritize depends on health history and current status. This can change week to week which is why partnering with us is highly recommended.
Our goal is to be the last practitioner you meet with regarding your main health complaint.
We love doctors and will work with yours to reach better outcomes. Their services provide great value but can have limitations when it comes to chronic health issues. Allopathic methods of medication and surgery are expensive and usually come with risk.
In addition, low health insurance reimbursements don't give doctors time to fully listen and coach you along the way.
